The Nationals Candidate for Calare Sam Farraway has announced he will commit $2
million to complete the stalled upgrades to Lithgow’s Main Street footpath project if he
is elected.
Mr Farraway said the funding will see Lithgow’s Main Street finally get the upgrade it
deserves under a Coalition Government after the Labor government withdrew the
original funding.
“Lithgow’s Main Street should be a thriving hub, but instead it’s a half-finished mess
because Lithgow Council failed to get the job done and the Albanese Government
took the easy way out by ripping the funding away,” Mr Farraway said.
“This project was originally funded under the Building Better Regions Fund, but thanks
to Council’s incompetence, Labor rescinded the funding—instead of working with them
to fix it. Now, Council has been forced to take out a loan, adding $600,000 in interest
to the project that ratepayers have to cover.
“Let’s be clear—$600,000 can go towards fixing potholes in the area, supporting local
businesses, or improving services, rather than forcing locals’ to foot the bill for a job
that should have been finished years ago.
“I’m furious—not just at Council for dragging its feet, but at Labor for punishing the
community by stripping away funding instead of helping to sort it out.”
Mr Farraway said that only a Coalition Government will deliver the $2 million needed
to get this project done—without it costing local ratepayers another cent.
“This funding will be delivered if the Coalition wins the election. If I’m elected, I’ll make
sure the money is there and personally hold Council accountable to make sure the
work gets done—no more excuses, no more delays.
“Lithgow is a town with so much potential, but it keeps getting let down. The main
street should be safe, welcoming and full of life—not an embarrassment. This project
has dragged on long enough. I’ll get it done.”
