The Nationals Candidate for Calare Sam Farraway has called on the Prime Minister to step in and ensure Mudgee’s air service remains in the sky, following Fly Pelican’s announcement to withdraw its Sydney-Mudgee flights from next month.
Mr Farraway is urging the federal government to redirect a portion of its $80 million bailout for Rex Airlines to support Rex in taking over the vital route.
“Fly Pelican’s decision hasn’t just left passengers in limbo—they’ve clipped the wings of
doctors trying to fly to Mudgee to address our healthcare shortages,” Mr Farraway said.
“Mudgee needs a reliable air service. I’ve heard far too many stories of Fly Pelican cancelling flights at the last minute, stranding doctors time and again. These cancellations have forced visiting medical professionals to fly to Dubbo and hire a car to get to Mudgee.
“This isn’t about luxury; it’s about life. A reliable air service is a lifeline for Mudgee. It connects our community, brings in essential professionals and supports local businesses.
“That’s why I have urgently written to the Prime Minister to redirect part of the bailout package to bring Rex Airlines onboard and get them flying the Sydney to Mudgee route.
“Rex Airlines has proven track record of connecting regional Australia. It’s a perfect fit.
“This announcement by Flypelican will have a devastating impact on Mudgee’s economy,
healthcare and connectivity.
“FlyPelican didn’t even have the courtesy to pick up the phone and let Mid-Western Regional Council know they were grounding the service. Our community deserves better than being left in the dark about decisions that impact our lives and livelihoods.
“I’m committed to finding solutions and the federal government has a role to play here to
ensure the people of Mudgee don’t get left behind.
“Let’s not allow Mudgee’s future be cancelled like FlyPelican’s flights. I’m calling on the Prime Minister to step up and ensure Mudgee remains connected to Sydney.”
Thank you so much Sam. You are fantastic with your support. An airline for Mudgee is essential. The Prime Minister needs to address the needs of country people for a change!!!!
Kind regards
Wendy
